November, 2004. This tub surround contains tiles from the past 120 years. I have been collecting them for over twenty years from various places around the world. The mosaics and little square tiles were made by me here at Blackbird Pottery. The wisteria tiles are Belgian, c. 1880, the Dutch people tiles are from England, c. 1890 or so. Some of these came to me from Australia, some from England, some from Holland and one from Germany. The Art Nouveau floral tiles at the bottom are English and Belgian. The field tiles are American, c. 1880, from the Trent and Robertson tile factories. The tiles under the boys with geese are Malibu tiles, c. 1927, made on the beach in Malibu, California. Malibu is my favorite tile factory because it was only in operation for about five years - the tiles that survive are precious. The women were given an extra hour and a half at lunch time in those days, and the gals would go out onto the beach. Tile seconds were thrown into the ocean and every now and then tile fragments still wash up on the shore after a storm. I want to go there.
